In places where expansive soils are present; ground water can be a real issue. Hydrostatic Pressure is a powerful thing and can lift and push on things you would prefer it didn't. When it rains the water doesn't just vanish. Instead, it seams into the soils and hangs around until it either evaporates and or finds a pathway out. Clay soils can hold and trap water relatively easily. I'm assuming that's why people decided to make clay pots?!? When the soil holds the water it expands and when it dries out, there is a dramatic shrinkage. This process creates voids and channels in the soil and also breaks bonds of soils that have been compacted when building the structure.
At Level Home we do a lot of French Drains and Sump Pump Systems and have found water even as we dig the trench to install a new drain. This after not raining for a week or so. I've placed a short video below to show what I mean. By giving the water a "path of least resistance" it will head away from the home rather than hang out and create issue. The purpose of drainage solutions is to stabilize the soil and keep them consistent.
