What is a Crawl Space Pier?

Updated: May 23, 2021

What is a crawl space pier? It's a question we get asked often as not many people have seen inside their crawl space and generally don't have much idea what holds up their home. A crawl space pier is something that holds the load of the wooden floor structure. The floor consists of several floor joists, these floor joists are held up by a perpendicular "support beam," the support beam is held up by crawl space piers. So ultimately the piers do all the heavy lifting. It's important when building these piers, that there is a proper base pad that will stop them from sinking into damp soils. Crawl spaces often hold moisture and if there is not a proper pad; the block ends up sinking into the mud created by the moisture. Level home brings in a pre-casted base pad that measures 4"x16"x16" and is made to withstand extreme pressures. From there we build up with Solid 8"x8"x16" Block. Between the top block and treated support beam you will find Steel Shims. Each crawl space pier is designed to last, that's why we spend the extra money on solid block and steel shims. Our logic is; if its done right the first time, it will be there for the life of the home!
